The Names and Titles of Jesus – I Am the Way the Truth and the Life-  Episode 104

This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is twelfth in the series.

John 14(NIV)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

John 20

30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Believe John 20:31 Greek (present continual tense)

  1. Credence – believing that the facts accepting the truth.
  2. Confidence – believing in (trust and obey)
  3. Continuance – go on believing (faith& faithfulness) John 20:31 Greek (present continual tense)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled”

Verse 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me…–

Verse 11: “Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.”

Yes. I’m leaving. No. You can’t come with me now. Yes, you will be scattered this night when they strike the shepherd, and I will do this work alone. But don’t let your sorrow . . . Don’t let your fear . . . Don’t let your shame . . . produce an unholy turmoil in your soul. Let not your hearts be troubled. Trust me. Trust God. Why? There will be a place for you in my Father’s house, as my Father’s children forever

Matthew 16:13

WHO IS JESUS

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

Today’s logic says that everybody’s right —-Everyone cannot be right

Who is this man who calls himself Jesus one of three possibility

  1. He is a liar/conman
  2. He is a lunatic
  3. The Son of the living God

Matthew 16:13

WHO IS JESUS

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

The scandal of Christianity is not Jesus is a truth or a Savior but the truth and the Savior and anyone who contradicts him is lost and that’s why the world hates him and hates us.

He’s not just a profit is not like others it’s his uniqueness that brings about his exclusiveness and that’s a scandal to the world.

Promises concerning the Messiah

  1. Genesis 49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[c] until he to whom it belongs[d] shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his
  2. Daniel 9;24 – 27 the city of Jerusalem was to be rebuilt
  3. Malachi 3 and Haggai 2 teach that the Messiah was to come while the second Temple was standing
  4. Isaiah 11 says a shoot will spring up of Jesse David’s father but even the root has been destroyed with the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D.

Daniel 9;27 says the Messiah would confirm the new covenant and put an end to sacrificial system the sacrificial

Finally Isaiah said the coming of the Messiah would be marked by a ingathering of the nations or Gentiles

Jesus is the Messiah and he was not just a man even the Jewish scribes said that the Messiah would not be just a man they said the son of David would be greater than they and that he would be Lord of David Mark 12:35 -37 and Psalms 110 he would be God that became man that’s exactly what happened

Mark 12:35 -37

35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? 36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies

until I put your enemies under your feet.”’[h]

37David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Matthew16:21

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. –

Matthew 5:48

Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Luke 10:25–37

25And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, s“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and tyour neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; udo this, and you will live.”

Justification / Sanctification

2 Corinthians 5

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18Now all these things are from God

NATURE – WILL – ACTIVITIES

John 14:6

Jesus answered “I AM THE WAY and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The Names and Titles of Jesus -The King of Kings, spirit filled, podcastThe Names and Titles of Jesus – The King of Kings Episode 103

This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is eleventh in the series.

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth

Abraham blessed by Melchizedek

7 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, 2and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” 3Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever.

4Just think how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! 5Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people— that is, from their fellow Israelites—even though they also are descended from Abraham. 6This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. 7And without doubt the lesser is blessed by the greater. 8In the one case, the tenth is collected by people who die; but in the other case, by him who is declared to be living. 9One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, 10because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor

Judah

Genesis 49:10 “Judah, your brothers will praise you;… The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

Israel Rejects God

1 Samuel 8 (NIV)6But when they said, “Give us a king to lead us,” this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD. 7And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. 8As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”

1 Samuel 12:12(NIV)… you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the LORD your God was your king.

The Anointing of King David (1 Sam. 16)

David was not “the” king of promise

“Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah … For thus says the Lord: David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel and the house of Judah” (Jeremiah 33:14-26). “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body and I will establish his kingdom … Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure before me forever” (II Samuel 7:11-16).

David was not “the” king of promise

Isaiah speaks of the coming son who will shoulder the government “upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom … from this time forth and for evermore” (9:6-9)

Ezekiel says that the Lord “will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David” (34:23). “My servant David shall be king over them … forever” (Ezekiel 37:24-25).

Psalm 45:6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom. 7You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of joy above Your fellows.

Once again their King would be God. God The Son

Matthew 1:1-17(NIV)

  1. This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: Abraham–Jesse the father of King David
  2. David –Josiah the father of Jeconiah[and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
  3. 12After the exile to Babylon—16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[e] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. 20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[g] (which means “God with us”).

Luke 1 New International Version (NIV)

God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might

Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

Matthew 2 New International Version (NIV)

2 After Jesus from as born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: 6“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’

Matthew 3 The Baptism of Jesus

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. 16As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him, I am well pleased.”

Hebrews 1

1 Timothy 6 (NIV)

Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, I charge you 14to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,15which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

Revelation 3:21 King James Version (KJV)

21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

Revelation 19

13He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”[a] He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.

Psalm 21

Why do the nations conspire[a]and the peoples plot in vain? 2The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the LORD and against his anointed, saying, 3“Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” 4The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” 7 I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father. 8 Ask me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.9 You will break them with a rod of iron; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.

11Serve the LORD with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. 12Kiss his son, or he will be angry and your way will lead to your destruction, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

John 1, verse 41: that Andrew “found his . . . brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which means Christ).” Messiah. Christ. This is what the Jews were expecting.

the Samaritan woman at the well

John 4

25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

Jesus to his disciples

Matthew 16

15“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven

To the high priest

What do you think?”

Feeding the Five Thousand

John 6

parables

Matt 13:3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, …

10And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 34All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.”

1 Peter 1

New Testament Preaching

“Saul . . . confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ” (Acts 9:22)

Acts 18 (28) you read about Apollos who “powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures [And what Scriptures would those have been? The Old Testament] that the Christ was Jesus” (v. 28).

The Ethiopian Eunuch

God’s anointed one—is a core tenet of our Christian faith.

Our faith is based on fact not fiction

Court of law—the evidence is overwhelming

  • Professor Peter Stoner used the mathematical principle called the Law of Compound Probability , to assess some of the prophecies relating to Christ.
  • He used it to calculate the odds against a chance; fulfillment of such predictions when compounded by a specific set of conditions, requirements, or qualifications.
  • His findings were carefully evaluated by the American Scientific Affiliation, and were found to be sound and convincing .
  • By this method, he was able to show evidence that would rule out coincidence, chance or human manipulation in the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

Chance fulfillment of biblical prophecy

  • Stoner started by calculating the probability of 1 individual who could precisely fulfill only 8 prophecies relating to Christ. He computed the odds at 1 in 10 17 . That’s 1 chance in 100,000,000,000,000,000 opportunities.
  • This is like covering the entire state of Texas 2 feet deep in silver dollars, marking 1 of them, and telling a blind man to pick the marked silver dollar on the 1st try.
  • That’s 8 prophecies

fact not fiction

  • Stoner then computed the odds of 1 individual that could fulfill just 48 prophecies relating to Christ. He calculated the odds at 1 X 10 157 . Those odds are beyond human comprehension.
  • But we know Jesus Christ fulfilled 332 distinct prophecies!

God’s Word is true. God has gone great lengths to give us “many convincing truths”

Court of law—the evidence is overwhelming

WHY IS JESUS REJECTED TODAY??

  • Jesus does not fit in there box.—Puppet Messiah –genie
  • Threat to their power
  • Many prefer a lie to the truth
  • For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear 2 Tim 4:3 (NIV)

God keeps His promises! Now He doesn’t always do it in the way or the time that we would expect.

John 20

30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Philippians 2:10-11 (NASB)

10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ ( The Messiah ) is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Heart of God – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 80

Today we take a break from our series on Hebrews to bring you a sermon I preached at the Pilot Point Church of Christ.

The Heart of God

Luke 15

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gatherings around to hear Jesus. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8“ Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Son

11Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20So he got up and went to his father.

Luke 15

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27‘your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32But we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

The Heart of God

Luke chapter 15

You don’t know my father!

God is like

A shepherd.
A woman.
A father.

Four different ways to be lost

  1. Like the lost sheep.
    2. Like the lost coin.
    3. Like the lost prodigal son.
    4. Like the lost older brother.

He believed the lie

Vs. 17 And when he came to himself

Jesus is greater than the Angels
chapter 1:4-2:18

SIDE STUDY ON ANGELS

ָאְלַמ The Hebrew word for Angel

ἄγγελος The Greek word for Angel
Old Testament:

messenger, representative

messenger

the theophanic angel
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Angels
God created angels before the earth‘s foundation

Job 38:4

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? Job On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Jude 6

And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

Ephesians 6:12-13

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

There are too many to count Hbr12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels.

Angels can not procreate or die Luke 20:36

Extremely powerful 2 Thess1:6-7, 2 Pet 2:11 …ThThinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presentlygive me more than twelve legions of angels? Matthew 26:53

One legion is 6,000 angels=72,000 angels

Isaiah 37:36 185,000 men in one night=1,110,000,000 men (that is, one billion, one hundred ten million men)

13,320,000,000 men (that is, thirteen billion, three hundred twenty million men)

They Have Super-Human Strength and Power (But Not Omnipotence)

2 Peter 2:11 … yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.

Psalm 103:20 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.

1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Matthew 24:36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father

They Have Super-Human Wisdom (But Not All Wisdom)

1 Corinthians 4:9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.

Ephesians 3:10-11 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hbr 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

That’s why the angels rejoice when a sinner repents because we have now  an eternal relationship with angels

Some have entertained angels unaware

Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares

  • God has used angels to carry messages from Himself to man. Communicate with us outside our five senses
  • God has used angels to arrange blessings for humans.
  • God has used angels to deliver us from harm.
  • God has used angels to answer prayer
  • God will use angels to escort me to Heaven when I die.

Old Testament:

Human messengers called Angels

Genesis 32 –Jacob

Luke 7:24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John…

Luke 9 : 51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he sstedfastly sethis face to go to Jerusalem,

52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

Old Testament:

the theophanic angel = THE ANGEL OF THE LORD
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Acts 7:30–35
“And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it the voice of the Lord [Yahwehin Hebrew] came unto him, saying, I am the God [Elohimin Hebrew] of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”

“Angel of the Theophany. This angel [MESSENGER ]is spoken of as ‘the angel of the Lord [Yahweh].’ The following passages contain references to this angel:

Genesis 16:7ff  the angel and Hagar
Genesis 18 Abraham intercedes with the angel for Sodom
Genesis 22:1ff  the angel interposes to prevent the sacrifice of Isaac
Genesis 24:7, 40 Abraham sends Eliezer and promises him the angels protection
Genesis 31:11ff the angel appearing to Jacob says, ‘I am the God [elohim] of Beth-el’
Genesis 32:24ff Jacob wrestles with the angel and says, ‘I have seen God [elohim] face to face’
Genesis 48:15ff Jacob speaks of God [elohim] and the angel as identical
Exodus 3
(
cf. Acts 7:30ff)
the angel appears to Moses in the burning bush

God or the angel leads Israel out of Egypt
Exodus 23:20ff the people are commanded to obey the angel
Exodus 32:34 to 33:17
(
cf. Isaiah 63:9)
Moses pleads for the presence of God with His people
Joshua 5:13–62 the angel appears to Joshua
Judges 2:1–5 the angel speaks to the people
Judges 6:11ff the angel appears to Gideon 4
Case For A Theophany

The case for the angel of the LORD being a theophany, a temporary appearance of God in a SpSpiritody, is as follows:

  1. Identified With God

In some contexts, the angel of the LORD is identified with God.

  1. Power To Give Life

The angel of the LORD is said to have power to give life (Genesis 16:10). Only God has this power.

  1. All-Knowing

The quality of omniscience, or knowing everything, is attributed to the angel of the LORD (Genesis 16:13; Exodus 3:7).

  1. Judge The Earth

The angel of the LORD is called the “Judge of all the earth” (Genesis 18:25). This is a title that belongs to God alone.

  1. Forgive Sin

The Bible says that only God can forgive sin. I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins (Isaiah 43:25). Yet the angel of the LORD had authority to forgive sins (Exodus 23:21).

  1. Receive Worship

Worshipbelongs to God and Him alone. Yet the angel of the LORD was worshipped by Moses and Joshua.

No man has seen or can see God

Exodus 33:19-21 (NKJV)Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the LORD said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock.

1 Timothy 6:16 (NKJV)who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Old Testament:

messenger, representative

messenger

the theophanic angel =“THE ANGEL OF THE LORD” PRECARNATE JESUS IN A VISIBLE FORM
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Jesus is greater than  the  Angels  because:

1.He is the only divine begotten Son of God. 1:4-2:4

2.He became a human/GODMAN. 2:4-18

Acts 7 (NIV)

Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.

Mt. Sinai

Deuteronomy 33 :1-2(NASB) …“The LORD came from Sinai, And dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came from the midst of ten thousand holy ones; At His right hand there was flashing lightning for them.

Psalm 68:17(KJV) The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.

7.98 million Jehovah’s Witnesses

15 million Mormons

1.6 billion Muslims

Accursed

Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed
Hebrews 1:4-5 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
He quotes 7 scripture from the OT to prove Jesus is greater than the Angels

1.Psalms 2:7
2.2 Samuel 7:14
3.Psalms 97:7
4.Psalms 104:4
5.Psalms 45:6-7
6.Psalms 102:25-27
7.Psalms 110:1

Isaiah 9 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Hebrews 1 6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.  7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Angels are servants!
Hebrews 1 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning, hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. 11 They shall perish, but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

Islam versus Christianity Part 4 – The Islamic View of Salvation

The Islamic view of salvation is radically different than Christianity. It is, however, more closely attuned to the common American view. How can we relate to a Muslim in talking about salvation if they do not see salvation in the same light as a Christian? These and other questions will be answered in this podcast.
