The Names and Titles of Jesus – Jesus Our Righteousness – Episode 110

This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is 17th in the series.

The Who of Our Righteousness and The How of Our Righteousness

Jeremiah 23 “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” says

the LORD. 2 Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for

my people: “You have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended

to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD.

5 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch,

and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the

land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which

he will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’

The Lord Our Righteousness.

Exodus 19 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall

be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which

thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

The Anointing of King David

(1 Sam. 16)

31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of

Israel and with the house of Judah— 32 not according to the covenant that I made with their

fathers in the day thatI took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant

which they broke, [h]though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. 33 But this is the covenant that

I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds,

and write it on their [i]hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 No more shall

every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall

know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their

iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

The Who of Our Righteousness and The How of Our Righteousness

DOUBLE IMPUTATION

Genesis 15 After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:

“Do not be afraid, Abram.

I am your shield,[a]

your very great reward.[b]”

2 But Abram said, “Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who

will inherit[c] my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children;

so a servant in my household will be my heir.”

4 Then the word of the LORD came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your

own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and

count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your

offspring[d] be.”

6 Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

4 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, discovered in this

matter? 2 If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about—but not

before God. 3 What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as

righteousness.”[a]

4 Now to the one who works, wages are not credited as a gift but as an obligation. 5 However, to

the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as

righteousness. 6 David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to

whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

7 “Blessed are those

whose transgressions are forgiven,

whose sins are covered.

8 Blessed is the one

whose sin the Lord will never count against them.”

Matthew 3 The Baptism of Jesus

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.14 But John tried to deter

him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then

John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was

opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice

from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of

God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21

The Names and Titles of Jesus – I Am the Way the Truth and the Life-  Episode 104

This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is twelfth in the series.

John 14(NIV)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” 8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” 9Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

John 20

30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Believe John 20:31 Greek (present continual tense)

  1. Credence – believing that the facts accepting the truth.
  2. Confidence – believing in (trust and obey)
  3. Continuance – go on believing (faith& faithfulness) John 20:31 Greek (present continual tense)

“Do not let your hearts be troubled”

Verse 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me…–

Verse 11: “Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.”

Yes. I’m leaving. No. You can’t come with me now. Yes, you will be scattered this night when they strike the shepherd, and I will do this work alone. But don’t let your sorrow . . . Don’t let your fear . . . Don’t let your shame . . . produce an unholy turmoil in your soul. Let not your hearts be troubled. Trust me. Trust God. Why? There will be a place for you in my Father’s house, as my Father’s children forever

Matthew 16:13

WHO IS JESUS

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

Today’s logic says that everybody’s right —-Everyone cannot be right

Who is this man who calls himself Jesus one of three possibility

  1. He is a liar/conman
  2. He is a lunatic
  3. The Son of the living God

Matthew 16:13

WHO IS JESUS

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

The scandal of Christianity is not Jesus is a truth or a Savior but the truth and the Savior and anyone who contradicts him is lost and that’s why the world hates him and hates us.

He’s not just a profit is not like others it’s his uniqueness that brings about his exclusiveness and that’s a scandal to the world.

Promises concerning the Messiah

  1. Genesis 49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[c] until he to whom it belongs[d] shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be his
  2. Daniel 9;24 – 27 the city of Jerusalem was to be rebuilt
  3. Malachi 3 and Haggai 2 teach that the Messiah was to come while the second Temple was standing
  4. Isaiah 11 says a shoot will spring up of Jesse David’s father but even the root has been destroyed with the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D.

Daniel 9;27 says the Messiah would confirm the new covenant and put an end to sacrificial system the sacrificial

Finally Isaiah said the coming of the Messiah would be marked by a ingathering of the nations or Gentiles

Jesus is the Messiah and he was not just a man even the Jewish scribes said that the Messiah would not be just a man they said the son of David would be greater than they and that he would be Lord of David Mark 12:35 -37 and Psalms 110 he would be God that became man that’s exactly what happened

Mark 12:35 -37

35While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? 36David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies

until I put your enemies under your feet.”’[h]

37David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Matthew16:21

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. –

Matthew 5:48

Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Luke 10:25–37

25And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, s“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and tyour neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; udo this, and you will live.”

Justification / Sanctification

2 Corinthians 5

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 18Now all these things are from God

NATURE – WILL – ACTIVITIES

John 1, verse 41: that Andrew “found his . . . brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which means Christ).” Messiah. Christ. This is what the Jews were expecting.

the Samaritan woman at the well

John 4

25The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” 26Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

Jesus to his disciples

Matthew 16

15“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” 16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven

To the high priest

Mark 14

61…Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 63The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. 64“You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”

Feeding the Five Thousand

John 6

14After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

parables

Matt 13:3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, …

10And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11Jesus answered them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been granted. 34All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “I WILL OPEN MY MOUTH IN PARABLES; I WILL UTTER THINGS HIDDEN SINCE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD.”

1 Peter 1

New Testament Preaching

“Saul . . . confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ” (Acts 9:22)

Acts 18 (28) you read about Apollos who “powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures [And what Scriptures would those have been? The Old Testament] that the Christ was Jesus” (v. 28).

The Ethiopian Eunuch

God’s anointed one—is a core tenet of our Christian faith.

Our faith is based on fact not fiction

Court of law—the evidence is overwhelming

  • Professor Peter Stoner used the mathematical principle called the Law of Compound Probability , to assess some of the prophecies relating to Christ.
  • He used it to calculate the odds against a chance; fulfillment of such predictions when compounded by a specific set of conditions, requirements, or qualifications.
  • His findings were carefully evaluated by the American Scientific Affiliation, and were found to be sound and convincing .
  • By this method, he was able to show evidence that would rule out coincidence, chance or human manipulation in the fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

Chance fulfillment of biblical prophecy

  • Stoner started by calculating the probability of 1 individual who could precisely fulfill only 8 prophecies relating to Christ. He computed the odds at 1 in 10 17 . That’s 1 chance in 100,000,000,000,000,000 opportunities.
  • This is like covering the entire state of Texas 2 feet deep in silver dollars, marking 1 of them, and telling a blind man to pick the marked silver dollar on the 1st try.
  • That’s 8 prophecies

fact not fiction

  • Stoner then computed the odds of 1 individual that could fulfill just 48 prophecies relating to Christ. He calculated the odds at 1 X 10 157 . Those odds are beyond human comprehension.
  • But we know Jesus Christ fulfilled 332 distinct prophecies!

God’s Word is true. God has gone great lengths to give us “many convincing truths”

Court of law—the evidence is overwhelming

WHY IS JESUS REJECTED TODAY??

  • Jesus does not fit in there box.—Puppet Messiah –genie
  • Threat to their power
  • Many prefer a lie to the truth
  • For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear 2 Tim 4:3 (NIV)

God keeps His promises! Now He doesn’t always do it in the way or the time that we would expect.

John 20

30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may believe[b] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Philippians 2:10-11 (NASB)

10 so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ ( The Messiah ) is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Names and Titles of Jesus – The Son of Man

The Names and Titles of Jesus –  The Son of Man Episode 100

This series of the names and titles of Jesus will give us a more in-depth understanding of Jesus Christ our Lord. This is ninth in the series. This is one of my favorite classes. I certainly learned a lot putting it together and there has been a great reception to it. The following is an outline.

What name or title did Jesus purposely call himself more than any other?

The Son of Man- Jesus chose that title to refer to himself 50 times, not counting the times it is repeated in the gospel

Son of Man = ben adam = son of a Human

Son of God = Divine

The Son of Man= human—-Jesus was the 2nd Adam—–God called Ezekiel “son of man” 90 times

1) no article
2) Ezekiel was a typology of Jesus-80 parallels Johns Rev

Who is the Antichrist?

Many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh; any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist! 2 John 1:7

The Son of Man title is so much more than Christ was human

Dan 2

40And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. 41And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. 42And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. 43And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. 44And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

Dan 7 12As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. 13I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

27And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.

  1. In the days of the fourth kingdom the Roman Empire The Son of Man will come who is the Messiah.
    2. The Son of Man will establish a kingdom that will destroy all other kingdoms and be an everlasting kingdom
    3. The Son of Man kingdom will come into existence when he ascends into heaven/comes to the ancient of days = God and sits on his throne
    4. We learn from other prophecies that when he comes he will do away with sacrificial system/which means destruction of the Temple and create a new covenant
    5. The Son of Man will become the judge of all the earth/all other kingdoms and their inhabitants.
    6. The Son of Man kingdom will not be destroyed nor will the The Son of Man Be destroyed
Phase 1

Jesus comes to earth calling himself The Son of Man and God bearing witness with miracles. – 50 times without counting duplication.
Jesus comes proclaiming the kingdom is at hand.
Jesus explains the nature of the inhabitants of the kingdom and the nature of the kingdom itself parable after parable – Many of these explanations are totally contrary to what they believed Daniel taught about the Son of Man and the coming kingdom.

Phase 2

Jesus begins to lay the bombshells that will destroy most of what the Jews believed about The Son of Man . The Son of Man is not just the Messiah, He is God.

Luke 5 The Son of Man is Devine

17And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 24But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

Luke 12 The Son of Man is Devine

5Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? 6But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple. 7But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless. 8For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day. 14Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him

John 9 Son of Man is the Son of God and divine

34They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. 35Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? 36He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? 37And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. 38And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

Son of Man is the son of God and divine

He receives worship from human beings.
He’s worshiped as a baby
Matthew eight is worshiped by the leper
Matthew nine he’s worshiped by the woman
Matthew 15 he’s worshiped
Matthew 28 is worship by the disciples
Revelation 5 is worshiped in heaven by the heavenly host
He’s worshiped in John 9:35

Phase 2

Jesus begins to lay the bombshells that will destroy most of what they believed about The Son of Man.

  1. The Son of Man is not just the Messiah, He is God.
    2. The son of man who is the Messiah and God in the flesh is going to die.

Matthew 16

13When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
21From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.

Luke 18:31Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.
Luke 9:44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
Luke 18:31Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished.

John 12 King James Version (KJV)

23And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. 32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33This he said, signifying what death he should die. 34The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth forever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man?

Phase 2

Jesus begins to lay the bombshells that will destroy most of what they believed about The Son of Man .

  1. The Son of Man is not just the Messiah, He is God.
The son of man who is the Messiah and God in the flesh is going to die.
Phase 3

His ascension and glorification and receiving a kingdom because of his death, burial and resurrection The Son of Man at His ascension is glorified and received the  kingdom

Son of Man Daniel 7

13“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

The ascension of The Son of Man

John 6:62 What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
Mat 26:64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
Act 7:56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God

Phase 2

Jesus begins to lay the bombshells that will destroy most of what they believed about The Son of Man .

  1. The Son of Man is not just the Messiah, He is God.
The son of man who is the Messiah and God in the flesh is going to die.
Phase 3

The Son of Man at His ascension and glorification and receiving a kingdom because of his death, burial and resurrection The Son of Man at His ascension is glorified and received the  kingdom

Phase 4

The Son of Man is now the Judge of all humanity

John 5 :27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man

Matthew 26

57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. 59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.  Finally two came forward 61and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’” 62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” 64“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[e] 65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.66What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered. • 67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”

SO WHAT!

Hebrews 4

14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,[f] Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Welcome to Mount Zion – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 90

Welcome to Mount Zion, Spirit Filled PodcastThis is the 23rd and last class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Welcome to Mount Zion

Preservation of the saints

Hebrews chapter 10:19-12:29

  • True faith will enable us to run the race of life. Hebrews chapter 12:1-4
  • True faith understands God’s discipline is not contrary to God’s love Hebrews chapter 12:5-14
  • True faith understands the imperative to live holy Hebrews chapter 12:14-17
  • True faith chooses the right mountain Hebrews chapter 12:18-28

18You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire; to darkness, gloom and storm; 19to a trumpet blast or to such a voice speaking words that those who heard it begged that no further word be spoken to them, 20because they could not bear what was commanded: “If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death.” 21The sight was so terrifying that Moses said, “I am trembling with fear.”

Hebrews 12

22But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, 23to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

Hebrews 12

25See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven? 26At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.”27The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Concluding Exhortations and Application

Hebrews chapter 13

Outline Hebrews 13:1-6

Application – be loving

  1. Be loving to the brethren – verse 1
  2. Be loving to those who are strangers – verse 2
  3. Be loving to those who are persecuted – verse 3
  4. Be loving to your companions – verse 4
  5. Be loving in a positive and negative way – verses 5-6

Hebrews 13

13 Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. 2Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. 3Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering. 4Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. 5Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” 6So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” 7Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so. 10 We have an altar from which those who minister at the tabernacle have no right to eat. 11The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp. 12And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood. 13Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. 14For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. 15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. 17 Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account. Do this so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no benefit to you.

Benediction and Final Greetings

18 Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way. 19 I particularly urge you to pray so that I may be restored to you soon.

20Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 22Brothers and sisters, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for in fact I have written to you quite briefly. 23I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you. 24Greet all your leaders and all the Lord’s people. Those from Italy send you their greetings. 25Grace be with you all.

Do Not Throw Away Your Confidence, Which Has A Great Reward – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 86

This is the 20th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Do Not Throw Away Your Confidence, Which Has A Great Reward
Preservation of the Saints

Hebrews chapter 10:19-12:29

Hebrews 10

32Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions

James 1

2Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and [h]without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Hebrews 10

32Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you endured in a great conflict full of suffering. 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to insult and persecution; at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34You suffered along with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions 35Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Hebrews 10

37For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.”[38And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Hebrews 11

0ne point, have faith in God and be patience and He will give you all that He has promised.

A persevering faith is always rewarded

VS. 1-40

Things that are called faith but are not.
  1. Faith, is not positive thinking
    2. Faith is not a hunch that is followed.
    3. Faith is not hoping for the best, hoping that everything will turn out all right.
    4. Faith is not a feeling of optimism

Hebrews 11

  • The first and second verses and the sixth verse, taken together, help define faith for us. Here we see the ingredients of faith:
  • Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old received divine approval. (Hebrews 11:1-2 RSV)
  • And without faith it is impossible to please God. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. (Hebrews 11:6 RSV)
Definition of faith in God
  1. Faith commences with “things hoped for,” that is, it starts with a sense of discontent.
    2. Then comes “the conviction of things not seen” aware that we are surrounded by an invisible spirit kingdom, that which is seen is not the whole explanation of life,
    3. “He that comes to God must believe that he is, that God exists.” There are some who say, “That’s the hard part, that’s what is difficult.” No, it is not.
    4. “The assurance of things hoped for.” achieved by acting on the revelation of the things unseen.
    5. By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear. (Hebrews 11:3 RSV)
The amazing deductions & implications and of Biblical faith
  • By faith, we understand that the world was created by the word of God so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear. (Hebrews 11:3 RSV)— That statement was made in the first century.
    • Biblical faith puts us immediately in touch with reality. Faith is a way of piercing the illusion that tends to distract us and lead us into chasing rabbits of thought all over the pasture and bring us right to the point, to show us things as they really are. Do not laugh at faith. Faith is dealing with facts. Faith grounds one immediately on reality.
Grounds one immediately in reality. What science can’t tell us, faith can.
  1. How human history is going to end, but by faith, I know.
    2. Science cannot tell me what is wrong with human life, what is the reason why I act the way I do, and you act the way you do but by faith I know.
    3. Cannot tell me what lies beyond the door of death. Even to the scientists, it is an enigma, a mystery, but by faith, I know what lies beyond. Mystery, but by faith I know what lies beyond.
    4. Cannot explain the mysteries of my own makeup, and tell me how to fulfill my manhood, how to realize my dreams, but faith can.

Hebrews 11(NASB)

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2For by it the men of old gained approval.

THE HEART OF BIBLICAL FAITH
CONVICTION

Hebrews 11

By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death; and he was not found because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was attested as having pleased God. (Hebrews 11:5 RSV)

Genesis 5:21-24 (NIV)

21When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.22After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more because God took him away.

Jude (NIV)

14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”

Hebrews 11

By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he received approval as righteous, God bearing witness by accepting his gifts; he died, but through his faith, he is still speaking. (Hebrews 11:4 RSV)

Cain believes a lie. – That one way is as good as another

Abel believed God and came the way God had outlined

Hebrews 11

By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his household; by this, he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith. 8By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. The 9by faith he made his home in the Promised Land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she[b] considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12And so from this one man, and he as good as dead came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore. 13All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Jesus our Great High Priest – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 74

This is the ninth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class

JESUS OUR PROPITIATION

4:14 -10:18

Chapter 4 An Exhortation to Enter God’s Rest

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands”

Difficulties with the word “rest”

Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion

1st Rest:
Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired?
2nd Rest:
Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land

Jesus Ἰησοῦς
Mat 1:21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Mat 1:22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
Mat 1:23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

Yahshua ַ הוֹשׁוּﬠ ְי
-1) The first element is YAH, which is the commonly accepted abbreviated form of YHVH
2) The interesting word group that starts with YAH then the Hebrew verb (shua), meaning to be saved or delivered.
-Yahshua is the name Joshua is a compilation of two elements.
-Why Joshua?

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands”

Difficulties with the word “rest”

Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion

1st Rest:
Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired?
2nd Rest:
Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land
3rd Rest:
Jesus leads people out of the bondage of sin to the promised land of heaven Rev 14:13

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Hebrews 4 (NIV)
4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ “And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” •

6Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

2 WARNINGS TO MAKE US MORE DILIGENT

1. THE WORD – 12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
1 Thessalonians 5:23- God will save your body soul and spirit.

2. God – 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

THE OLD TESTAMENT SACRIFICE

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

JESUS OUR PROPITIATION
4:14 -10:18
JESUS OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST
4:14 –16

Look back
1. Hebrews 1:3…When He had made purification of sins,
2. Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
3. Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Jesus is our Great High Priest
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.

  • For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.
  • 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was. • 5So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, • “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU”; • 6just as He says also in another passage, • “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

“You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
Genesis14:17 Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18AndMelchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He gave him a tenth of all.

  • 10being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.11Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

Baby Christian

  • 1 Peter 2 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation John 16“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
Ephesians 4:12until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.14As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

Jesus the Great Emancipator – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 72

This is the seventh class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Chapter 3

Jesus the great emancipator

Jesus the Son is greater than Moses Chapters 3:1-4:13

Important points to remember verses 1-6:

  • Moses and Jesus were exodus leaders.
    • Just like Moses lead Gods people out of bondage to the promised land , Moses was unique until Jesus came
    • Jesus as an exodus leader takes Gods people  out of bondage [the bondage  of sin ] and brings them to a new promised land [ the new heaven  and earth ] and He is greater
    • He’s not dealing with Moses  as a lawgiver he’s already dealt with that in chapter  1:1-3 Prophets
    • We see the son from 2 viewpoints
    1. THE APOSTLE 3:1-4:14
    2. THE HIGH PRIEST 4:14-10:18

Hebrews 3(NIV)

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. 3Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5“ Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. 6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

Different types of Apostles

Remembering the word apostle means one sent out.

  1. Apostles sent by God – Moses and Jesus
    2. Apostles sent by Jesus-14
    3. Apostles sent/commissioned by the Holy Spirit –Barnabas James
    4. Anybody sent out i.e. the church
    • ‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false
    • 2 Corinthians 12:12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. (NASB)

Worthy of Greater Honor than Moses

  • Jesus is the builder of the house
    • Moses is the house
    • What is the house?
    • The family of God =Like Moses Jesus was appointed or made over the whole family of God– Moses did not make people children of God but Jesus does

Worthy of Greater Honor than Moses

  • Jesus is the builder of the house
    • Moses is the house
    • What is the house?
    • The family of God =Like Moses Jesus was appointed or made over the whole family of God– Moses did not make men children of God but Jesus does
    • Not only is he over the children of God but over the whole human race i.e. he is God

Hebrews 3(NIV)

  • Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.  7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:  “Today, if you will hear His voice, 8Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, 9Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

2 Things you Need for an Assurance of Going to Heaven

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
1. A hope of your salvation- to the degree that you glory in it
2. An outspoken faith

If you have that, God is building into you the characteristics that will take you all the way into heaven! But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15(NIV)

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.

Redeemed Humanity Versus the Angels – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 71

Redeemed Humanity Versus the Angels, Spirit Filled Podcast, Bible StudyThis is the sixth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas. This podcast ends two of us the greatest chapters in the Bible.

The following is the outline of the class.

Jesus is greater than the Angels

Chapter 1:4-2:18

Comparing Jesus with the angels

Jesus

  • Only begotten Son
    • Direct lineage to God
    • Worship Him
    • Sits on the throne
    • God the father calls Him God

Angels

  • They’re not
    • They never
    • Never worshipped
    • They serve
    • Ministering spirits

Keep this in mind

  • Not only did Jesus become flesh
    • Not only did Jesus live in the flesh
    • Not only  die  in  the flesh
    • But  He was raised in the flesh
    • He ascended  in the flesh-He is  still  a man, He kept  His humanity

 Outline for chapter 2:5-18
Another problem associated with angels

  • In the first chapter the writer emphasizes the Son’s deity now, he emphasizes  Jesus humanity to complete the picture of why the Son is greater than the angels.
    • Not only God but man and He can bridge a gap that the angelic host could not

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.”  In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present, e do not see everything subject to them. 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory,

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.

The Jews spoke of 3 worlds

  1. The world that was = the world before Mt Sinai
    2. The world that is = as a Jewish nation
    3. The world to come = when the Messiah comes

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them .9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Philippians 2

5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Romans 8 New (NIV)

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Suffering and death for God’s violated law

1 Corinthians 2:9

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

To defeat the most powerful angel Lucifer

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Romans 8 (NIV)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

To defeat the most powerful angel Lucifer

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

  • 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. • 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

Relating to the 2 different offices of Jesus

LORD

  • Work
    • Obedience
    • Service
    • Always relating to His Lordship

HIGH PRIEST

  • Sin
    • Forgiveness
    • Grace
    • That’s where we relate to His Priesthood

17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  • He rules the universe and angels and will send one to help me
    • I have one of my kind raised from the dead in a glorified body assured me I can be in heaven with him • I know he understands and identifies with me
    • He has rendered powerless my enemy Satan
    • He’s freed me from the fear of death so I don’t have to live in that bondage
    • He’s a faithful and merciful High Priest always ready to serve my every need
    • He has entered into heaven waiting for the day that the father says it’s time to go get our people

That’s the message of the first two chapters of Hebrew

The following is the outline of the class.

Son versus the prophets

Hbr 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by [His] Son

    2. He made the worlds
    3. He is brightness of God’s glory
    4. The express image of God
    5. Upholding all things by the word of his power
    6. Purged our sins
    7. Sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high

Jesus is greater than the Angels

Chapter 1:4-2:18

Angels

  • God has used angels to carry messages from Himself to man. communicate with us outside our five senses
    • God has used angels to arrange blessings for humans.
    • God has used angels to deliver us from harm.
    • God has used angels to answer prayer
    • God will use angels to escort me to Heaven when I die.

Comparing Jesus with the angels

Jesus:
• Only  begotten Son
• Direct lineage to God
• Worship Him
• Sits on the throne
• God the father calls Him God

Angels:
• They’re not
• They never
• Never worshipped
• They serve
• Ministering spirits

Hebrews 2

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Drift also Leak Out

  • Acts 13:52…. filled with joy
    • Ephesians 5:18… filled with the Holy Spirit
    • 2 Corinthians 7:4…filled with comfort
    • Matthew 5:6… Hunger and thirst
    • Romans 15… filled with knowledge

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Hebrews 10  (NIV)

  • 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

SIDE STUDY ON THE DESTINY OF CHRISTIANS

James 2: 26 for as the body without the spirit is dead,

Philippians 1:21-24 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me, and I do not know which to choose.
23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

To depart and be with Christ for that is very much better.

YOUR RESURRECTED GLORIFIED HUMAN BODY – God’s extreme makeover.

Resurrection of mortal body

Romans 8:10-11 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Resurrection

Mar 12:24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
1Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

The scope of our redemption demands it.

  1. The Biblical view of man. (Gen. 1:12, 18 &25)
    2. Death – the enemy of God. (I Cor. 15:26)
    3. Salvation means, literally, to be made whole.
    Heb.10:39   Salvation of soul.
    1Cor. 5:5    Salvation of Spirit.
Rom 8:23   The redemption of our bodies.

Our destiny demands it.

  1. God became a man with a body. (John1:1, 14)
    2. Jesus’ destiny is our destiny. (Rom. 8:17) 1Cr 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.
    3. He promised we would never die. (John 11:25-26)

Our new environment demands it.
1. “New heavens and new earth” (II Pet. 3:13 – Heb. 1:12)
2. Powerful unimaginable changes. The ultimate makeover (I Cor. 15:37)

1Cr 15:35-38 But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come? “You fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies; and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own

Incredible Change

Our new environment demands it.

Powerful unimaginable changes. Actual changes

no digestive system – (I Cor. 6:13)
no sexual relationship – (Mt. 22:30)
no aging – (I Cor. 15)
glorious – (I Cor. 15)
powerful – no handicaps – (I Cor. 15)
perfectly fitted for our new home – (I Cor. 15)

I John 3: 1-3 1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure

2 CORINTHIANS 5:1-4  Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile, we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-17 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

Romans 8:17-18  17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

IT WILL HAPPEN AT THE 2ND COMING OF CHRIST

There will be 3 great signs. (I Thess. 4:14-18)
1. The last great trumpet.
2. The shout of Michael.
3. The appearance of Jesus with all the spirits of the saved who have died. Then the resurrection of dead Christian bodies & then the changing of all our bodies. All in the blink of an eye

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
