The Copy of Things in Heaven – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 83

The Copy of Things in Heaven, John D Kimbrough | Spirit Filled PodcastThis is the 17th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

The Copy of Things in Heaven

The Son’s sacrifice is superior to the O.T. sacrifice

Hebrews chapter 9:12-10:18

Hebrews 9

23Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

Hebrews 9

25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.

Hebrews 10

23to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

Hebrews 9

26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 82

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant, Spirit Filled Podcast. Bible Study*We apologize for the sound quality on this recording.*

This is the 16th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant

The old covenant was inadequate and faulty, the new covenant is complete will never age

  1. The old covenant was inadequate because of its nature/law of works.
  2. The old covenant was inadequate because of its national/civil function and administration.
  3. The old covenant was faulty because its membership did not know God – had to be taught about God.
  4. The old covenant was faulty because once you sinned God could not make you right with that covenant.
  5. The old covenant was faulty because it was not designed to last forever.
The Place of Jesus Ministry

Hebrews chapter 9

9 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

1 Kings 6 (NIV)

14So Solomon built the temple and completed it. 15He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of juniper.16He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 17The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits[i] long. 18The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen. 19He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there. 20The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. 21Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. 22So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.

Leviticus 16

11“Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. 12He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. 13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. 14He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. • 7But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. • 8The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. • 9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. • 10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order

Matthew 27

45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (Which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d] 47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” 50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order 11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation.

The Son’s Sacrifice is Superior to the O.T. Sacrifice

Hebrews chapter 9:12-10:18

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! 15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

Hebrews 9

16In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. (NIV) 16For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. 17For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. • (NASB)

Hebrews 9 (NASB)

18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. • 19For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.” 21And in the same way he sprinkled both the [v]tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22And according to the [w]Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Matthew 26 (NASB)

27And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 9

23Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

The Heart of God – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 80

Today we take a break from our series on Hebrews to bring you a sermon I preached at the Pilot Point Church of Christ.

The Heart of God

Luke 15

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gatherings around to hear Jesus. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8“ Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Son

11Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20So he got up and went to his father.

Luke 15

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27‘your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32But we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

The Heart of God

Luke chapter 15

You don’t know my father!

God is like

A shepherd.
A woman.
A father.

Four different ways to be lost

  1. Like the lost sheep.
    2. Like the lost coin.
    3. Like the lost prodigal son.
    4. Like the lost older brother.

He believed the lie

God’s Most Frightening Warning – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 76

This is the eleventh class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

God’s Most Frightening Warning

Hebrews 6 (NASB)

6 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do, if God permits.

GOD’S WARNING

Hebrews Chapter 6:4-8 A

4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift

Hebrews 2 (NASB)

9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

IN CHRIST

7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace • EPH 1

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38

4You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. Galatians 5:4

3You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. John 15

Calvinism

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Different categories of falling away

1.Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame
2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism

Galatians 5 (NASB)

1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
2Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Different categories of falling away

  1. Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior
    2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world

2 Peter 2 (NASB)

20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”

You can restore a Christian caught in sin.

Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Different categories of falling away

  1. Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior
    2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world
    4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren —–1 John3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.

1 Corinthians 3(NIV)

16Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

Different categories of falling away

  1. Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior
    2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world
    4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren
    5. False teacher = someone who knowingly perverts a gospel tenet about Jesus

Galatians (NASB)

8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

The 5 Great Points of the Gospel:

  1. Incarnation
    2. Cross
    3. Resurrection
    4. Ascension
    5. Second Coming

    6. Lukewarm Christian = don’t care, selfish Christians

Revelation 3:14-19 (NASB)

14“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: • The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the [a] Beginning of the creation of God, says this: • 15‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 16So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will [b]spit you out of My mouth. 17Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.

IN CHRIST

Hebrews 6 (NASB)

6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 7For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.

Jesus our Great High Priest – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 74

This is the ninth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class

JESUS OUR PROPITIATION

4:14 -10:18

Chapter 4 An Exhortation to Enter God’s Rest

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands”

Difficulties with the word “rest”

Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion

1st Rest:
Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired?
2nd Rest:
Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land

Jesus Ἰησοῦς
Mat 1:21 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Mat 1:22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
Mat 1:23 “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.”

Yahshua ַ הוֹשׁוּﬠ ְי
-1) The first element is YAH, which is the commonly accepted abbreviated form of YHVH
2) The interesting word group that starts with YAH then the Hebrew verb (shua), meaning to be saved or delivered.
-Yahshua is the name Joshua is a compilation of two elements.
-Why Joshua?

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands”

Difficulties with the word “rest”

Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion

1st Rest:
Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired?
2nd Rest:
Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land
3rd Rest:
Jesus leads people out of the bondage of sin to the promised land of heaven Rev 14:13

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Hebrews 4 (NIV)
4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ “And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” •

6Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

2 WARNINGS TO MAKE US MORE DILIGENT

1. THE WORD – 12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
1 Thessalonians 5:23- God will save your body soul and spirit.

2. God – 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

THE OLD TESTAMENT SACRIFICE

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

JESUS OUR GREAT HIGH PRIEST
4:14 –16

Look back
1. Hebrews 1:3…When He had made purification of sins,
2. Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
3. Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Jesus is our Great High Priest
14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.

Our Journey Home to the Promised Land – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 73

This is the eighth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Jesus the Son is greater than Moses

Recap of Chapter 3 verses 1-6

Moses and Jesus were the only two Apostles of God sent to be exodus leaders. vs. 1
Both were faithful ln carrying out their Apostleship vs. 2
Jesus was worthy of greater honor because he created the Israelite race while Moses  was an Israelite- Moses did not make men, children of God, but Jesus does vs 3-4
Moses was a servant as an exodus leader, but Jesus is a Divine Son vs. 4

If we want to follow Jesus, our exodus leader, all the way into the promised land of heaven we need:
1. A hope of salvation to the degree that you glory in it.
2. An outspoken faith

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.  7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:  “Today, if you will hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, 9Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

2 ways you can test God

1st way is to trust God – this is a good way.
For example a missionary’s prayer.
2nd way is to not believe/trust God – this is a bad way – this is how the Israelites did it – To question God’s motives.

Numbers 30 (NASB)

1Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, “This is the word which the LORD has commanded. 2If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.
3“Also if a woman makes a vow to the LORD, and binds herself by an obligation in her father’s house in her youth, 4and her father hears her vow and her obligation by which she has bound herself, and her father [a]says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand and every obligation by which she has bound herself shall stand. 5But if her father should forbid her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or her obligations by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her because her father had forbidden her.

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

12Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end, 15while it is said, “TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME.” 16For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

Chapter 4 an exhortation to enter God’s rest

Hebrews 4 (NIV)

4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.

2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’”And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” rested from all his works.” 5And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

Hebrews 4 (NIV)

“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands”

2 HELPERS TO MAKE US MORE DILIGENT
    2. God – 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Jesus our Great High Priest Vs 14 – 16

Jesus is our Great High Priest

14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Jesus the Great Emancipator – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 72

This is the seventh class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Chapter 3

Jesus the great emancipator

Jesus the Son is greater than Moses Chapters 3:1-4:13

Important points to remember verses 1-6:

  • Moses and Jesus were exodus leaders.
    • Just like Moses lead Gods people out of bondage to the promised land , Moses was unique until Jesus came
    • Jesus as an exodus leader takes Gods people  out of bondage [the bondage  of sin ] and brings them to a new promised land [ the new heaven  and earth ] and He is greater
    • He’s not dealing with Moses  as a lawgiver he’s already dealt with that in chapter  1:1-3 Prophets
    • We see the son from 2 viewpoints
    1. THE APOSTLE 3:1-4:14
    2. THE HIGH PRIEST 4:14-10:18

Hebrews 3(NIV)

Jesus Greater Than Moses

Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest. 2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house. 3Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5“ Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,” bearing witness to what would be spoken by God in the future. 6But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory.

Different types of Apostles

Remembering the word apostle means one sent out.

  1. Apostles sent by God – Moses and Jesus
    2. Apostles sent by Jesus-14
    3. Apostles sent/commissioned by the Holy Spirit –Barnabas James
    4. Anybody sent out i.e. the church
    • ‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false
    • 2 Corinthians 12:12 The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles. (NASB)

Worthy of Greater Honor than Moses

  • Jesus is the builder of the house
    • Moses is the house
    • What is the house?
    • The family of God =Like Moses Jesus was appointed or made over the whole family of God– Moses did not make people children of God but Jesus does

Worthy of Greater Honor than Moses

  • Jesus is the builder of the house
    • Moses is the house
    • What is the house?
    • The family of God =Like Moses Jesus was appointed or made over the whole family of God– Moses did not make men children of God but Jesus does
    • Not only is he over the children of God but over the whole human race i.e. he is God

Hebrews 3(NIV)

  • Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.  7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:  “Today, if you will hear His voice, 8Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, 9Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. 10Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’ 11So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’”

2 Things you Need for an Assurance of Going to Heaven

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
1. A hope of your salvation- to the degree that you glory in it
2. An outspoken faith

If you have that, God is building into you the characteristics that will take you all the way into heaven! But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15(NIV)

Hebrews 3(NKJV)

6but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.

Redeemed Humanity Versus the Angels – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 71

Redeemed Humanity Versus the Angels, Spirit Filled Podcast, Bible StudyThis is the sixth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas. This podcast ends two of us the greatest chapters in the Bible.

The following is the outline of the class.

Jesus is greater than the Angels

Chapter 1:4-2:18

Comparing Jesus with the angels

Jesus

  • Only begotten Son
    • Direct lineage to God
    • Worship Him
    • Sits on the throne
    • God the father calls Him God

Angels

  • They’re not
    • They never
    • Never worshipped
    • They serve
    • Ministering spirits

Keep this in mind

  • Not only did Jesus become flesh
    • Not only did Jesus live in the flesh
    • Not only  die  in  the flesh
    • But  He was raised in the flesh
    • He ascended  in the flesh-He is  still  a man, He kept  His humanity

 Outline for chapter 2:5-18
Another problem associated with angels

  • In the first chapter the writer emphasizes the Son’s deity now, he emphasizes  Jesus humanity to complete the picture of why the Son is greater than the angels.
    • Not only God but man and He can bridge a gap that the angelic host could not

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.”  In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present, e do not see everything subject to them. 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory,

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.

The Jews spoke of 3 worlds

  1. The world that was = the world before Mt Sinai
    2. The world that is = as a Jewish nation
    3. The world to come = when the Messiah comes

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them .9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Philippians 2

5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Romans 8 New (NIV)

16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. 23Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Suffering and death for God’s violated law

1 Corinthians 2:9

“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered. 11Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters. 12He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly I will sing your praises.” 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

To defeat the most powerful angel Lucifer

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

Romans 8 (NIV)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

To defeat the most powerful angel Lucifer

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

  • 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. • 17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

17For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

  • He rules the universe and angels and will send one to help me
    • I have one of my kind raised from the dead in a glorified body assured me I can be in heaven with him • I know he understands and identifies with me
    • He has rendered powerless my enemy Satan
    • He’s freed me from the fear of death so I don’t have to live in that bondage
    • He’s a faithful and merciful High Priest always ready to serve my every need
    • He has entered into heaven waiting for the day that the father says it’s time to go get our people

That’s the message of the first two chapters of Hebrew

Our Redeemed Destiny in Christ- Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 70

This is the fifth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Son versus the prophets

Hbr 1:1-2 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by [His] Son

Hebrews 1:2-3

  1. He appointed heir of all things
    2. He made the worlds
    3. He is brightness of God’s glory
    4. The express image of God
    5. Upholding all things by the word of his power
    6. Purged our sins
    7. Sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high

Jesus is greater than the Angels

Chapter 1:4-2:18

Angels

  • God has used angels to carry messages from Himself to man. communicate with us outside our five senses
    • God has used angels to arrange blessings for humans.
    • God has used angels to deliver us from harm.
    • God has used angels to answer prayer
    • God will use angels to escort me to Heaven when I die.

Comparing Jesus with the angels

Jesus:
• Only  begotten Son
• Direct lineage to God
• Worship Him
• Sits on the throne
• God the father calls Him God

Angels:
• They’re not
• They never
• Never worshipped
• They serve
• Ministering spirits

Hebrews 2

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Drift also Leak Out

  • Acts 13:52…. filled with joy
    • Ephesians 5:18… filled with the Holy Spirit
    • 2 Corinthians 7:4…filled with comfort
    • Matthew 5:6… Hunger and thirst
    • Romans 15… filled with knowledge

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Hebrews 10  (NIV)

  • 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. 2For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, 3how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, 4God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?

Outline for chapter 2:5-18
Another problem associated with angels

  • In the first chapter the writer  emphasizes the Son’s deity now, he emphasizes  Jesus humanity to complete the picture of why the Son is greater than the angels.
    • Not only God but man and He can bridge a gap that the angelic host could not.
  • 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
    • “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.”
    • In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present, we do not see everything subject to them.
•[9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.10In bringing many sons and daughters to glory,
  • Not only did Jesus become flesh
    • Not only did Jesus live in the flesh
    • Not only die in the flesh
    • But He was raised in the flesh
    • He assended in the flesh-He is still a man, He kept His humanity
  • Hebrews 2 (NKJV)
  • 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
    • “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.
SIDE STUDY ON THE DESTINY OF CHRISTIANS

James 2: 26 for as the body without the spirit is dead,

Philippians 1:21-24 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me, and I do not know which to choose.
23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

To depart and be with Christ for that is very much better.

YOUR RESURRECTED GLORIFIED HUMAN BODY – God’s extreme makeover.

Resurrection of mortal body

Romans 8:10-11 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.

Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Resurrection

Mar 12:24 Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
1Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?

The scope of our redemption demands it.

  1. The Biblical view of man. (Gen. 1:12, 18 &25)
    2. Death – the enemy of God. (I Cor. 15:26)
    3. Salvation means, literally, to be made whole.
    Heb.10:39   Salvation of soul.
    1Cor. 5:5    Salvation of Spirit.
Rom 8:23   The redemption of our bodies.

Our destiny demands it.

  1. God became a man with a body. (John1:1, 14)
    2. Jesus’ destiny is our destiny. (Rom. 8:17) 1Cr 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.
    3. He promised we would never die. (John 11:25-26)

Our new environment demands it.
1. “New heavens and new earth” (II Pet. 3:13 – Heb. 1:12)
2. Powerful unimaginable changes. The ultimate makeover (I Cor. 15:37)

1Cr 15:35-38 But someone will say, “How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come? “You fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies; and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else. But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own

Incredible Change

Our new environment demands it.

Powerful unimaginable changes. Actual changes

no digestive system – (I Cor. 6:13)
no sexual relationship – (Mt. 22:30)
no aging – (I Cor. 15)
glorious – (I Cor. 15)
powerful – no handicaps – (I Cor. 15)
perfectly fitted for our new home – (I Cor. 15)

I John 3: 1-3 1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. 2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure

2 CORINTHIANS 5:1-4  Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. Meanwhile, we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-17 Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

Romans 8:17-18  17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

IT WILL HAPPEN AT THE 2ND COMING OF CHRIST

There will be 3 great signs. (I Thess. 4:14-18)
1. The last great trumpet.
2. The shout of Michael.
3. The appearance of Jesus with all the spirits of the saved who have died. Then the resurrection of dead Christian bodies & then the changing of all our bodies. All in the blink of an eye

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

  • 5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
    • “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.

The Jews spoke of 3 worlds

  1. The world that was = the world before Mt Sinai
    2. The world that is = as the Jewish nation
    3. The world to come = when the Messiah comes

Hebrews 2 (NKJV)

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? 7You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor 8 and put everything under their feet.
In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present, we do not see everything subject to them
9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.
10For it was fitting for Him, for who are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

12He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers and sisters; in the assembly, I will sing your praises.” 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like them,[k] fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Jesus versus the Angels – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 69

This is the fourth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Jesus versus the Angels

Hebrews 1:2-3
1. He appointed heir of all things

2.He made the worlds

3.He is brightness of God’s  glory

4.The express image of God

5.Upholding all things by the word of his power

6.Purged our sins

7.Sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high

Jesus is greater than the Angels
chapter 1:4-2:18

SIDE STUDY ON ANGELS

ָאְלַמ The Hebrew word for Angel

ἄγγελος The Greek word for Angel
Old Testament:

messenger, representative

messenger

the theophanic angel
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Angels
God created angels before the earth‘s foundation

Job 38:4

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? Job On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Jude 6

And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day.

Ephesians 6:12-13

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

There are too many to count Hbr12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels.

Angels can not procreate or die Luke 20:36

Extremely powerful 2 Thess1:6-7, 2 Pet 2:11 …ThThinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presentlygive me more than twelve legions of angels? Matthew 26:53

One legion is 6,000 angels=72,000 angels

Isaiah 37:36 185,000 men in one night=1,110,000,000 men (that is, one billion, one hundred ten million men)

13,320,000,000 men (that is, thirteen billion, three hundred twenty million men)

They Have Super-Human Strength and Power (But Not Omnipotence)

2 Peter 2:11 … yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.

Psalm 103:20 Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.

1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Matthew 24:36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father

They Have Super-Human Wisdom (But Not All Wisdom)

1 Corinthians 4:9 For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like men condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men.

Ephesians 3:10-11 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Hbr 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

That’s why the angels rejoice when a sinner repents because we have now  an eternal relationship with angels

Some have entertained angels unaware

Heb 13:2 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares

Old Testament:

Human messengers called Angels

Genesis 32 –Jacob

Luke 7:24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John…

Luke 9 : 51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he sstedfastly sethis face to go to Jerusalem,

52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.

Old Testament:

messenger, representative

messenger

the theophanic angel = THE ANGEL OF THE LORD
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Acts 7:30–35
“And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it the voice of the Lord [Yahwehin Hebrew] came unto him, saying, I am the God [Elohimin Hebrew] of your fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”

“Angel of the Theophany. This angel [MESSENGER ]is spoken of as ‘the angel of the Lord [Yahweh].’ The following passages contain references to this angel:

Genesis 16:7ff  the angel and Hagar
Genesis 18 Abraham intercedes with the angel for Sodom
Genesis 22:1ff  the angel interposes to prevent the sacrifice of Isaac

Exodus 23:20ff the people are commanded to obey the angel
Exodus 32:34 to 33:17
(
cf. Isaiah 63:9)
Moses pleads for the presence of God with His people
Joshua 5:13–62 the angel appears to Joshua
Judges 2:1–5 the angel speaks to the people
Judges 6:11ff the angel appears to Gideon 4
Case For A Theophany

The case for the angel of the LORD being a theophany, a temporary appearance of God in a SpSpiritody, is as follows:

  1. Identified With God

In some contexts, the angel of the LORD is identified with God.

  1. Power To Give Life

The angel of the LORD is said to have power to give life (Genesis 16:10). Only God has this power.

  1. All-Knowing

The quality of omniscience, or knowing everything, is attributed to the angel of the LORD (Genesis 16:13; Exodus 3:7).

  1. Judge The Earth

The angel of the LORD is called the “Judge of all the earth” (Genesis 18:25). This is a title that belongs to God alone.

  1. Forgive Sin

The Bible says that only God can forgive sin. I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and I will not remember your sins (Isaiah 43:25). Yet the angel of the LORD had authority to forgive sins (Exodus 23:21).

  1. Receive Worship

Worshipbelongs to God and Him alone. Yet the angel of the LORD was worshipped by Moses and Joshua.

No man has seen or can see God

Exodus 33:19-21 (NKJV)Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” 21 And the LORD said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock.

1 Timothy 6:16 (NKJV)who alone has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see, to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen.

Old Testament:

messenger, representative

messenger

the theophanic angel =“THE ANGEL OF THE LORD” PRECARNATE JESUS IN A VISIBLE FORM
angel (111x), messenger (98x), ambassadors (4x), variant (1x).

New Testament:

a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God

angel (179x), messenger (7x).

Jesus is greater than  the  Angels  because:

1.He is the only divine begotten Son of God. 1:4-2:4

2.He became a human/GODMAN. 2:4-18

Acts 7 (NIV)

Was there ever a prophet your ancestors did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him—53 you who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.

Mt. Sinai

Deuteronomy 33 :1-2(NASB) …“The LORD came from Sinai, And dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came from the midst of ten thousand holy ones; At His right hand there was flashing lightning for them.

Psalm 68:17(KJV) The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.

7.98 million Jehovah’s Witnesses

15 million Mormons

1.6 billion Muslims

Accursed

Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed
Hebrews 1:4-5 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
He quotes 7 scripture from the OT to prove Jesus is greater than the Angels

1.Psalms 2:7
2.2 Samuel 7:14
3.Psalms 97:7
4.Psalms 104:4
5.Psalms 45:6-7
6.Psalms 102:25-27
7.Psalms 110:1

Isaiah 9 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Hebrews 1 6 And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.  7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Angels are servants!
Hebrews 1 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning, hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. 11 They shall perish, but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment; 12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. 13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? 14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?
