The Copy of Things in Heaven, John D Kimbrough | Spirit Filled PodcastThis is the 17th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

The Copy of Things in Heaven

The Son’s sacrifice is superior to the O.T. sacrifice

Hebrews chapter 9:12-10:18

Hebrews 9

23Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

Hebrews 9

25Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.

Hebrews 10

23to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,

Hebrews 9

26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 82

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant, Spirit Filled Podcast. Bible Study*We apologize for the sound quality on this recording.*

This is the 16th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Christ the Mediator of a New Covenant

The old covenant was inadequate and faulty, the new covenant is complete will never age

  1. The old covenant was inadequate because of its nature/law of works.
  2. The old covenant was inadequate because of its national/civil function and administration.
  3. The old covenant was faulty because its membership did not know God – had to be taught about God.
  4. The old covenant was faulty because once you sinned God could not make you right with that covenant.
  5. The old covenant was faulty because it was not designed to last forever.
The Place of Jesus Ministry

Hebrews chapter 9

9 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. 2A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place. 3Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place, 4which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered Ark of the Covenant. This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron’s staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant. 5Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.

1 Kings 6 (NIV)

14So Solomon built the temple and completed it. 15He lined its interior walls with cedar boards, paneling them from the floor of the temple to the ceiling, and covered the floor of the temple with planks of juniper.16He partitioned off twenty cubits at the rear of the temple with cedar boards from floor to ceiling to form within the temple an inner sanctuary, the Most Holy Place. 17The main hall in front of this room was forty cubits[i] long. 18The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen. 19He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the ark of the covenant of the LORD there. 20The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty wide and twenty high. He overlaid the inside with pure gold, and he also overlaid the altar of cedar. 21Solomon covered the inside of the temple with pure gold, and he extended gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, which was overlaid with gold. 22So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary.

Leviticus 16

11“Aaron shall bring the bull for his own sin offering to make atonement for himself and his household, and he is to slaughter the bull for his own sin offering. 12He is to take a censer full of burning coals from the altar before the LORD and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense and take them behind the curtain. 13He is to put the incense on the fire before the LORD, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die. 14He is to take some of the bull’s blood and with his finger sprinkle it on the front of the atonement cover; then he shall sprinkle some of it with his finger seven times before the atonement cover.

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

6 When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry. • 7But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. • 8The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still functioning. • 9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. • 10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order

Matthew 27

45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (Which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d] 47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.” 50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

10They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings—external regulations applying until the time of the new order 11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation.

The Son’s Sacrifice is Superior to the O.T. Sacrifice

Hebrews chapter 9:12-10:18

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.
9This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.

Hebrews 9 (NIV)

13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! 15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.

Hebrews 9

16In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. (NIV) 16For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. 17For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives. • (NASB)

Hebrews 9 (NASB)

18Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood. • 19For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20saying, “THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.” 21And in the same way he sprinkled both the [v]tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry with the blood. 22And according to the [w]Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Matthew 26 (NASB)

27And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

Hebrews 9

23Therefore it was necessary for the copies of the things in the heavens to be cleansed with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24For Christ did not enter a holy place made with hands, a mere copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;

The Work of the Ascended Christ – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 81

This is the 15th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

The Work of the Ascended Christ

Major points from last week

As a system Old Testament Aaronic was inadequate because a new priesthood was prophesied.
2. It was inadequate because it was made up of dying men, where this new priesthood of Jesus isn’t.
3. The Old Testament Aaronic priesthood was appointed by God but there was never an oath given to them.
4. The Old Testament priesthood was tied to the law.
5. With the new priesthood of Jesus we can draw near to God.

Hebrews 7

22Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant. 23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them 26Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

Hebrews 9

14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!  26Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Ephesians 5

1Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

The work of the ascended Christ
Chapter 8

Hebrews 8

1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being. 3Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.

Peter’s references to Christians as a “holy priesthood” or a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5, 9; cf. Revelation 1:6; 5:10; 20:6).

  1. Paul viewed his evangelistic work among the Gentiles, in a manner of speaking, as a priestly work (see “ministering” [Romans 15:16]). His converts were thought of as an “offering” to God.
    2. The Philippian Christians were a joy to Paul. Their faith was like a sacrifice that had been given up to God; if necessary, he was willing for his own life to be “poured out as a drink offering” to complement that sacrifice (Philippians 2:17, 2 Timothy 4:6).
    3. As the apostle wrote from his incarceration in Rome, he reflected upon the recent support conveyed by Epaphroditus from the church in Philippi. It was an “odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18).
    4. Note the similar imagery set forth in Hebrews 13:15-16.15Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
    5. Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. 4The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake. Revelation 8 3
    6. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service. And be not fashioned according to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God (12:1-2).

Hebrews 8

4If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain. 6But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. 7For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8But God found fault with the people and said[b]: “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord

John 1

17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 8

10This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 11No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest 12For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” 13By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

The Heart of God – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 80

Today we take a break from our series on Hebrews to bring you a sermon I preached at the Pilot Point Church of Christ.

The Heart of God

Luke 15

15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gatherings around to hear Jesus. 2But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

3Then Jesus told them this parable: 4“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Coin

8“ Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

Luke 15

The Parable of the Lost Son

11Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13“Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.14After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20So he got up and went to his father.

Luke 15

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27‘your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32But we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

The Heart of God

Luke chapter 15

You don’t know my father!

God is like

A shepherd.
A woman.
A father.

Four different ways to be lost

  1. Like the lost sheep.
    2. Like the lost coin.
    3. Like the lost prodigal son.
    4. Like the lost older brother.

Jesus our High Priest Forever – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 79

This is the 14th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Jesus our High Priest Forever

The order of Melchizedek

Hebrews 6:20 -7:20

ABRAHAM patriarch

Prophet – Priest – King

The order of Melchizedek

BLESSES ABRAHAM

ABRAHAM PAYS TITHES

ALSO A KING NO GENEALOGY

  • ABRAHAM
  • TRIBE OF LEVI
  • AARON AARONIC PRIESTHOOD
  • DAVID/JUDAH

Melchizedek Priesthood was greater Than the Jewish Levitical Priesthood Proven by the Genesis 14 Encounter between Abraham and Melchizedek

Melchizedek was greater than Abraham – The Jewish priesthood came from Abraham
Melchizedek was a king and a priest – Jewish priesthood could not be both
Melchizedek was made like the son of God
The Jewish priesthood could only take tithes by law from Jewish people – Melchizedek could take tithes from anyone – he was not even a Jew therefore his priesthood was universal
The official blessing could only be given by the greatest person to the lesser person Melchizedek blessed Abraham, therefore he was greater
There was no need for a law to make Abraham give tithes to Melchizedek he was inherently worthy of 10%

1 Corinthians 16

1Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. 2On the first day of every week each one of you is to [a]put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come. 3When I arrive, whomever you may approve, I will send them with letters to carry your gift to Jerusalem; 4and if it is fitting for me to go also, they will go with me

2 Corinthians 9

7Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed;

Romans 15:4

For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Hebrews 7

11If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Hebrews 7

11If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? 12For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.

Hebrews 7

13For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar. 14For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

18For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by through which we draw nigh unto God.

20And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest: • 21(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sworn and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) • 22By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament

God’s Blueprint of Jesus – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 78

This is the 13th class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

God’s Blueprint of Jesus

Hebrews class 13
chapter 7

Melchizedek – God’s Photoshop of Jesus Our High Priest
Hebrews 6:20 -7:20

17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

Jewish Old Covenant Priesthood

Definition – a priest is one authorized form the sacred rights of a religion, especially as a mediator between man and God. He always represented man to God.
There were priests before Mount Sinai

development of redemption - John D Kimbrough | Spirit Filled Podcast

Jewish Old Covenant Priesthood

Definition – a priest is one authorized form the sacred rights of a religion, especially as a mediator between man and God. He always represented man to God.
There were priests before Mount Sinai. At Mount Sinai God designated Aaron and his descendants to serve as priests
All priests were Levites, but not all Levites were priests. Not anyone other than Aaron and his descendants could be priests-They received a tithe
Qualifications Of priestly service

  1. Must be a male
    2. Must be a descendent of Aaron with a documented lineage
    3. Must be between 30 and 50 years old

Qualifications Priesthood

Must be unblemished not lame or blonde
His marriage must be – not to a harlot, not to a divorced woman, Not to a window other than a priests window
The high priest must marry a virgin of his own people.
Must have no uncleanness leprosy etc.
Must have an un-trimmed beard
Must have special God ordained clothing
The high priest– Direct the work of the priests and Levites– Inquire of the Lord– Maintain the golden candlestick with fire – offering sacrifices on the day of atonement
The position of high priest continued to the time of Jesus was eliminated in 70 A.D.

New Testament Priesthood

All Christians are priests, and, with spiritual sacrifices (Rom. 12:1ff; Phil. 2:17; 4:18; Heb. 13:15-16; 1 Pet. 2:5), we offer up service to God through our High Priest, Jesus Christ (Heb. 3:1; 4:14ff), references to children of God as “priests” in the New Testament (1 Pet. 2:5, 9; Rev. 1:6; 5:10; 20:6).

False Ideas Associated with Priesthood
  1. “were clothed with the powers of Jesus Christ,” and that Catholic priests, as “successors” of the apostles, are similarly endowed with their power (James Cardinal Gibbons, The Faith of Our Fathers, Baltimore: John Murphy, 1917, p. 387ff). The idea is closely associated with the delusion that in performing the “Mass,” the priests are sacrificing the body of Christ — a notion completely at variance with the Scriptures. The New Testament teaches that Jesus was sacrificed once, and that was entirely sufficient (cf. Heb. 9:25-28).
    2. The Mormon theory of priesthood is equally erroneous. Mormonism promotes two priesthoods, without which, supposedly, there can be no salvation. These are the Melchizedek and the Aaronic priesthoods (Doctrine & Covenants 107:1-3,5). The Mormon priesthood dogma has no authority higher than that of Joseph Smith, Jr., who claims to have “restored” the ancient order of priests on May 15, 1829

First of all, the Melchizedek priesthood was to belong to Christ, and to none other, until the end of time. The writer of Hebrews says concerning Jesus that: “. . . he, because he abides forever, has his priesthood unchangeable” (7:24).
Second, the Aaronic priesthood cannot be operative today because it was an integral part of the law of Moses, which law was abolished by Christ (Eph. 2:15), one could not restore the Aaronic priesthood without “of necessity” resurrecting the entire Mosaic law (Heb. 7:12).

The order of Melchizedek
Hebrews 6:20 -7:20

Hebrews 7
7 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

“YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

Genesis14:17 Then after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18AndMelchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; now he was a priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He gave him a tenth of all.

Hebrews 7
7 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;

Psalm 76King James Version (KJV)

76 In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel. 2In Salem also is his tabernacle and his dwelling place in Zion.

Hebrews 7

7For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Hebrews 7

4Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. 5And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest’s office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from Abraham. 6But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham and blessed him that had the promises. 7And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. 9And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, paid tithes in Abraham.

Matthew 22

41While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42Saying, what think ye of Christ? Whose son is he? They say unto him, the son of David. 43He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45If David then call him Lord, how is he his son? 46And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

This is the twelfth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

Our Greatest Assurance of Salvation

GOD’S WARNING

Hebrews Chapter 6:4-8

Hebrews 6(NASB)

1.For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
2. And have tasted of the heavenly gift
3. And have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
4. And have tasted the good word of God
5. And the powers of the age to come,
6. And then have fallen away,
7. It is impossible to renew them again to repentance since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Different categories of falling away

1.Apostate = someone who leaves Christ for another savior
2. Judaizer = someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
3. Backslider = someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world
4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren
5. False teacher = someone who knowingly perverts a gospel tenet about Jesus
6. Lukewarm Christian = don’t care, selfish Christians

GOD’S MEMORY – OUR ENCOURAGEMENT

Verses 9-12

9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Malachi 3 (NIV)

16Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17“On the day when I act,” says the LORD Almighty, “they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him. 18And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

Hebrews (NASB)

9But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.10For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. 11And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Good Works

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
James 2:18 – Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
James 2:26 – For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Hebrews 13:16 – But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Matthew 25

31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. The goats on his left. 34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40“The King will reply, ‘truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

GREATEST ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
Verses 13-20

Hebrews 6 (NASB)

13For when God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, 14saying, “I WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU.” 15And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath,

The heirs of the promise

Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise

17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, Hebrews 6 (NASB)

17For it is attested of Him,
“YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”  18For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment because of its weakness and uselessness 19(for the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God. 20And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21(for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him,
“THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, ‘YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER’”);

Hebrews 6 (NASB)

17In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, 18so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us.19This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.

God’s Most Frightening Warning – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 76

This is the eleventh class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

God’s Most Frightening Warning

Hebrews 6 (NASB)

6 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do, if God permits.

GOD’S WARNING

Hebrews Chapter 6:4-8 A

4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift

Hebrews 2 (NASB)

9But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” Galatians 4:6
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

IN CHRIST

7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace • EPH 1

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38

4You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. Galatians 5:4

3You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned. John 15

Hebrews 6(NASB)

  1. 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened
    2. and have tasted of the heavenly gift
    3. and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
    4. 5and have tasted the good word of God
    5. and the powers of the age to come,
    6. 6and then have fallen away,
    7. it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Different categories of falling away

1.Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame
2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism

Galatians 5 (NASB)

1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
2Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. 4You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace.

Different categories of falling away

  1. Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior
    2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world

2 Peter 2 (NASB)

20For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. 21For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them. 22It has happened to them according to the true proverb, “A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT,” and, “A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire.”

You can restore a Christian caught in sin.

Galatians 6:1 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 7Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Different categories of falling away

  1. Apostate= someone who leaves Christ for another savior
    2. Judaizer= someone who wants to hold on to Christ and Judaism
    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world
    4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren —–1 John3:14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death.

1 Corinthians 3(NIV)

16Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? 17If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

Different categories of falling away

    3. Backslider= someone who leaves Christ to go back into the world
    4. Unloving Christian = someone who does not love the brethren
    5. False teacher = someone who knowingly perverts a gospel tenet about Jesus

Galatians (NASB)

8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!

    5. False teacher = someone who knowingly perverts a gospel tenet about Jesus
    6. Lukewarm Christian = don’t care, selfish Christians

Revelation 3:14-19 (NASB)

14“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: • The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the [a] Beginning of the creation of God, says this: • 15‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. 16So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will [b]spit you out of My mouth. 17Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, 18I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. 19Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.

6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 7For ground that drinks the rain which often falls on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.

Jesus our Perfect Priest – Spirit Filled Podcast Episode 75

Jesus our Perfect Priest - John D Kimbrough | Spirit Filled PodcastThis is the tenth class on the book of Hebrews. This Bible class was taught at the Pilot Point Church in Pilot Point Texas.

The following is the outline of the class.

JESUS OUR PROPITIATION   4:14 -10:18

Jesus our Great High Priest 4:14 –16

Look back.

  1. Hebrews 1:3…When He had made purification of sins,
    2. Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
    3. Hebrews 3:1 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession

Jesus is our Great High Priest

14Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Jesus our Great High Priest
Hebrews chapter 5

Hebrews 5:1-10

4 things necessary to be a Priest

  1. Class —- mankind vs. 1a
    2. Service —- something to offer. vs. 1b
    3. Disposition —— merciful vs. 2-3
    4. Appointment —- Devine vs. 5-10

Hebrews (NASB)

For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.

4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was. 5So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU”; 6just as He says also in another passage, “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

“You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”

“Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Ephesians 4:12until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.14As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

Hebrews 6 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

6 Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, 2of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. 3And this we will do, if God permits.

Hebrews 6 King James Version (KJV)

6 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

Definition: anything which God initiates and brings to a conclusion

1st Rest:
Gen 1&2 creation started and completed. Was God tired?
2nd Rest:
Moses leads God’s people out of the bondage to the promised land
3rd Rest:
Jesus leads people out of the bondage of sin to the promised land of heaven Rev 14:13

13 Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”

Hebrews 4 (NIV)
4 Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. 2For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed 3Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ “And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” 5And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” •

6Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, 7God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

2 WARNINGS TO MAKE US MORE DILIGENT

1. THE WORD – 12For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
1 Thessalonians 5:23- God will save your body soul and spirit.

2. God – 13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

THE OLD TESTAMENT SACRIFICE

13Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Look back
1. Hebrews 1:3…When He had made purification of sins,
2. Hebrews 2:17-18 Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews
For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.

Hebrews (NASB)

  • For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; 2he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is beset with weakness; 3and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins, as for the people, so also for himself. 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was.
  • 4And no one takes the honor to himself, but receives it when he is called by God, even as Aaron was. • 5So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, • “YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU”; • 6just as He says also in another passage, • “YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.”

Hebrews (NASB)

  • 7In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety. 8Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.9And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, 10being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5 (NASB)

  • 10being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.11Concerning him we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. 12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.14But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.

1. The subject matter – Godhead
2. The teacher doesn’t have a good grasp of the subject.
3. The audience is not ready

  • 1 Peter 2 Therefore, putting aside all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander, 2like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation John 16“I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
